I have constructed as a miniature stage or world inside a small, wooden box, which serves as the motif for these paintings. Inside are landscape flats representing shrubs, trees, mountains, etc. painted in watercolor, cut out, arranged and illuminated.
The imagery is rooted in landscape, and began as a way for me to continue looking at the landscape through the winter. However, I quickly realized that working from this constructed, controlled space is nothing like painting the landscape. These paintings embrace the peculiar experience of observing an invented, and even changeable place. The work has evolved to honor that distinction, allowing the artificiality of the setup to become an essential part of the paintings themselves.
